Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the body's needs. This slows down many of the body's functions, affecting metabolism, energy levels, and overall health. It is one of the most common endocrine disorders, particularly in women.

With accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, hypothyroidism can be effectively managed, allowing patients to lead normal, healthy lives.

Symptoms

  • Persistent fatigue and sluggishness
  • Weight gain despite no change in diet
  • Feeling cold even in warm weather
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin and brittle nails
  • Hair loss or thinning hair
  • Puffy face, especially around the eyes
  • Depression or low mood
  • Slowed heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Irregular or heavy menstrual periods
  • Poor memory and difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle aches and stiffness

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune disorder)
  • Thyroid surgery or radioiodine treatment
  • Certain medications (e.g., lithium, amiodarone)
  • Iodine deficiency or excess
  • Pituitary gland disorders
  • Congenital hypothyroidism (present from birth)
  • Pregnancy-related thyroid changes

Diagnosis

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) blood test
  • Free T4 (Thyroxine) level
  • Free T3 level (when indicated)
  • Thyroid antibody tests (Anti-TPO, Anti-TG)
  • Thyroid ultrasound if structural abnormalities are suspected

Treatment

Levothyroxine Therapy

The standard treatment is daily oral levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone that replaces what the thyroid gland cannot produce. The dose is carefully titrated based on blood test results and symptoms.

Regular Monitoring

Periodic TSH and thyroid hormone level checks to ensure optimal dosing and disease management.

Dietary Advice

Guidance on iodine intake and foods that may interfere with thyroid function or medication absorption.
